Invisible or Not?

Postive Aging, LifestyleJan Correll2 Comments
invisible_silver-1.jpg

“Excuse me!”  “Pardon me!”  “Can you please tell me where to find this?”  “Can you please help me with a question?” “Can you please assist me?”  Lately I feel like I am may be invisible at times.  Could I be dreaming and they just can’t see me?  No, I’m here and wide-awake.  Are they choosing not to see me?   This doesn’t make sense to me so I ask why?  Do they think I don’t matter… that I am old… that I’m not going to buy anything?

I know that I matter; I know that I have buying power.  I am buying for aging parents, my husband, myself, my children and my grandchildren… and my pups.  I have the ability to spend money.

If you’ve been following me for any length of time you know I rarely write about struggles or negativity and although you may think I’m going there I’m not.  I truly want to understand why some people look past a mid-life woman or cannot find it in their means to assist us.

What I have come to realize is it’s not about us.  It’s a result of poor customer service skills, poor training, and frankly, people can be so mired in their own lives they don’t take the time to listen and are trying to get through their day as best they can.  You never know what someone else is going through.

How do I know this because as many times as I have been silent and just kept asking for help, other times I have spoken up and persisted to get help.  Those times, I have made it a point to ask about them and to show some kindness.  A few months back, I was in a popular clothing store in NYC and had this very experience.  I was trying to get my questions about returns answered after standing in a long line.  I was told very rudely to move aside after my question was answered, and I had an armload full of clothes.   After asking numerous people for help, I was at my whit’s end.  Before I blew my top, I asked her if she was having a great day.  She told me it had been kind of rough and our short chat developed into more.  I moved aside to order online at a terminal so that I could in fact make a return and she came over to see if I needed help.  I was touched and we proceeded to chat.  She truly was a dear and I knew in my heart that she felt bad for our original interaction.

Time and time again, I am happy to share that this approach has worked.  The time it doesn’t…  you will see me talking to the store manager about customer service or walking out the door with no packages.

So these days, I don’t take these situations personally or think it has anything to do with my age or me… I know it truly has to do with them.  I now know that because of my wisdom, maturity, grace and kindness, I just might be able to help someone else when I was the one seeking assistance.

I hope that you have not had a similar experience. But I also know that many of my friends and family have as I have heard their stories. Maybe we are more aware of it as we age and it was happening all along we just were mired in our lives at the time and did not notice.

Thanks for following along and hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

A Versatile Spring Piece...

It’s Hump Day all! Yay… and we are halfway to the weekend. I am looking forward to a couple of events Saturday and Sunday and plan to wear this beautiful bomber jacket, a Johnny Was design.

I know many of you may have heard of the brand but if I am introducing you to it for the first time, I’m delighted. Their designs cross cultures and defy trends. Yes, there is a bohemian spirit and a sense of authenticity. Their inspiration comes from anything beautiful, genuine and special and can be likened to a striking piece of artwork. (Just like all of us!) Johnny Was is known for their signature embroideries, luxe fabrics and effortless silhouettes. When I wear Johnny Was I feel like my personal style always shines through.

I love the fact that it is slightly quilted since it’s still cool here in the Carolina’s… especially at night. If my upper arms are cold, I act like it is below zero and shivering, (the same in air conditioning). Anybody else with me? So the fact that this bomber jacket is REVERSIBLE with two different silk, color pallets and designs, and will keep me warm is a huge bonus. I will be wearing this on repeat from now until… fall. Definitely an investment piece with limitless options for your wardrobe. If you are planning to travel, this jacket will see you through any journey, whether a weekend jaunt or a 10 day cruise.

I have paired it as a casual look and then dressed it up a bit with a Johnny Was dress. The dress is an incredibly soft knit and versatile, too. Another great piece to add to your wardrobe. I have posted shopping links below.

Do you own any Johnny Was pieces? If not, definitely check them out for spring and summer. So many beautiful clothes, that are so much fun to wear and style! Thank you to Johnny Was for sponsoring this post! And thank you to Jennifer Austin Photography for her wonderful work behind the camera..

Have a great week, friends.

Ageless Active, Lifestyle, Postive Aging, TravelJan CorrellComment
One of my best friends is beside me on this trip… my daughter!

One of my best friends is beside me on this trip… my daughter!

There’s nothing quite like setting off on a new adventure while having your very best friends by your side as you explore new places and make new memories together. Sometimes you don’t even need to go out of the country to broaden your horizons and try new things. Below are six great trips to take with your girlfriends that will keep you staying active and having tons of fun!

New York City is a great place to visit if you and your girlfriends are up for a wild adventure and don’t mind the hustle and bustle of a big city. New York City is known as the “melting pot” of the United States, so expect lots of great food and wonderful cultural experiences! Experience a day of tourism and visit places like Central Park, Times Square, The Statue of Liberty, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Empire State Building, or indulge in a theatrical experience at a Broadway play or musical. No matter what adventures you choose to embark on, you’re guaranteed to have an amazing experience.

Charleston, South Carolina is the perfect low-country destination getaway if your friend group enjoys exceptional seafood, rich history and beautiful historical landmarks, and of course, the beach! From Charleston Harbor tours to exploring the Battery and Fort Sumter, Charleston is home to beautiful views and excellent tourist sights. After spending a few hours scouting out the best sights and touring the grounds of Boone Hall and Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, you and your girlfriends should treat yourselves to a night of drinks and excellent cuisine on King Street.

Nashville, Tennessee is known as the home of country music, so if you and your closest friends can’t help but join in every time a country song comes on the radio, Nashville is the place for you. Some great places to visit in Nashville include the Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and Music Row. For those who aren’t as keen on country music, don’t fret, Nashville has something for you too! Places like the Tennessee State Capitol Building, Belmont Mansion, and The Gulch, are all destinations that are sure to impress the history lover, the fashion expert, and the art connoisseurs of the group.

Denver, Colorado is full of beautiful, scenic sights and tons of adventurous outdoor activities. Some must see places in Denver include the Denver Botanic Gardens, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and the Denver Art Museum. If you like to hike, there are so many wonderful hiking trails that are less than an hour outside of the city!

Wine Country in California is a must if you and your girlfriends love wine almost as much as you love traveling! Explore the Napa or Sonoma regions with your friends, and treat yourselves to an abundance of fabulous wine tastings and upscale cuisine as you take in all of the rich culture that Wine Country has to offer. A few things to check off your travel list when in Wine Country includes touring the stunning vineyards and participating in a wine tasting, going on a hot air balloon ride over the valleys, or exploring on the ground on a bike tour.

Blowing Rock, North Carolina is the perfect destination for friends that love a scenic view of the mountains. You can spend your days hiking and enjoying the beauty of nature, or roaming through the various shops in the picturesque downtown of Blowing Rock. From skiing and exploring waterfalls, to spa days and winery tours, Blowing Rock has a little bit of everything for everyone in your friend group!

No matter the destination, wherever you decide to go you’re sure to make a lot of wonderful memories with your girlfriends... and don’t forget to take a lot of pictures to document your travels! And since today is International Women’s Day… don’t forget to celebrate those friends that are always behind you or beside you every single day.

At the core of my being… I want to be stronger.  As I age, I want to: get down on the floor (easily), pick up 30 pounds as if it’s no problem and and want to make sure that I am in control of my body.  My legs are strong, my arms are strong… I need to develop a strong core.  Why? My goal is to look and feel my best everyday and to always be able to get down on my grandchildren’s level till they tower over me.

We all have problem areas… mine is my core.  I forgot about it for the longest time.    So when looking for it and ways to improve my body, I found Pilates; originally known as “Contrology” and developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century.  Lucky for the Charlotte area and many other cities across the US,  I found Club Pilates

My Girl's Photo Shoot

Beauty, Ageless Active, Fashion, Super Women, Perennial Style, LifestyleJan CorrellComment

As a Mom I have two awesome children, a son and a daughter. I feel awfully lucky as they are both special people that are very dear to me and Mr. Silver. My son and wife, have two children, a son and daughter and my daughter and her husband, have two sons. When our daughter shared the news they were expecting a third, we all prayed for a healthy baby and Momma. And when they shared the news that this one was going to be a little girl, I was thrilled that she too would get to experience a Mother/Daughter relationship… as we have shared.

My daughter and I have fun and loving affinity and have always supported each other. We have also pushed each other when needed and are very open and honest with each other. It’s like having a best friend, other than your hubby.

When I decided to start the blog, she was behind me in every aspect. She took some of my first pictures and then handed that responsibility over to her Dad. She was always fluffing, fixing and catching little things that a detailed eye could see. And it always made me feel so special.

When she decided to do a maternity shoot, she planned it so I could be there. I was so excited to be part of this to in turn do the same that she had always done for me! We had such a fun time as they setting was magical and the “golden hour” was perfect.

My daughter chose her very close friend, Kameron Rogers for this shoot, Owner of Kameron C. Photography. She is based in Texas and I highly recommend her, if you have photography needs. She is super talented and made it so much fun that the three of us laughed the whole time.

Investing in Beauty Sleep

Beauty, Ageless Active, Lifestyle, HomeJan CorrellComment
IMG_6498.JPG

As an ageless woman, I have realized how important sleep is.  I used to be able to get by on 5-6 hours of sleep but learned the wear and tear that regimen can take on your body and your beauty.  ;)  Once I hit 60, I made the decision to not take my sleep lightly.

Mr. Silver and I had been discussing investing in a new mattresses since we both felt we were tossing and turning way too much each night.  He sleeps very sound, whereas I am a very light sleeper and usually wake at least 2-3 times per night.  My waking is usually the result of night sweats or just being uncomfortable in a particular position.  Do you wake up many times each night, too?

So we turned to the Internet and began researching the best mattresses out there.  Luckily we found The Wave by @casper.com, designed for advanced support for your body at 33 key points, temperature regulation (breathable foam for increased airflow) and 5 layers of premium foam.

I want you to know that although this is a sponsored post, I am truly in love and so happy with our new mattress, that I would endorse this mattress regardless.  Mr. Silver and I are both sleeping better than we have in years and feel that this bed was made specifically for us.  I am sleeping through the night.  Neither one of us is tossing nor turning and best of all, I have eliminated my night sweats.

If you are considering a new mattress, I would highly suggest The Wave by @casper.com.  It was shipped directly to our home, setup was a snap, and they offer a 100-night trial with free return and pickup.  You have nothing to lose but everything to gain by investing in a great night’s sleep.

Roll with it Baby!!

Beauty, Fashion, Lifestyle, MakeupJan Correll2 Comments

I love that song... and I have to agree...sometimes you've got to roll with it baby, soak it up and take it all in.  And this month my friends... that is just what I am doing!

As many of you may know, I was featured by the New York Times and Ruth LaFerla as one of seven Grandmas's of Instagram.  It is still surreal to me but I am ever grateful to have been included with these fabulous women.  A high school girlfriend in Tampa sent me her newspaper from Tampa and I was smack dab on the fashion page. This is the same girlfriend that worked with me in my Dad's chicken restaurant, Mr. Drumstick.  (We wore white uniforms with orange and white striped aprons... truly not a glamorous start.) Ha. Since then, I have been featured by Charlotte Stories here and CharlotteFive here, Darla Desiderioboth wonderful features, as well as on a live radio interview by Patti Mercer, in Fort Mill, SC where I reside.

You can imagine my excitement when a Charlotte TV station asked me to join them on their morning show and tell my story about age positivity as well.  I thoroughly enjoyed Tonya Rivens and Julianna White... they made it so much fun.  I felt like I was sitting down with friends.  What a great experience.  You can watch the interview here.

Next, a gentleman reached out to me on Instagram, which I usually delete.  "Lucky" is his name and he shared that he had just seen me on a top 30 TV station.  Not understanding completely, I had to say "huh" and "where?"  Lucky was nice enough to find the link for me to share with my family.   I loved this video and want to share it with you, created by Fox46 Charlotte's Page Fehling:

Please know that I am not tooting my horn, rather I am sharing what is possible for anyone at any age. You can do anything!  And I am here to support and tell you that the time is right, grab it, hold onto it, create it, do what you want and most importantly... roll with it, baby!

My goal is to share ageless style, and endless fun, from a sincerely silver perspective.  Including fashion, beauty, and relevant lifestyle information as we share this journey together!  And as always thank you for reading my blog!

Life is a Party

Life is a party... dress for it
— Audrey Hepburn
IMG_5846.jpg

A few months back, I had the opportunity to wear three Teri Jon dresses for an article and photo shoot featuring several Mother of the Bride/Groom dresses for Paul Simon Women in Charlotte by yours truly and @scoopcharlotte.  I sincerely did not know what I was in for until I put the first dress on and my heart skipped a beat when I looked in the mirror.  The quality, the designs and the fabrics make these dresses very special and a brand that women have trusted with all of life’s special occasions for over 35 years.

IMG_5744.jpg

Rickie Freeman, the founder, CEO and designer at Teri Jon is also a wife, mother, and grandmother; and believes that all of these roles combined are her inspiration behind the collections.  I love the fact that Rickie tries on each and every design ensuring a proper fit for every woman.

IMG_5554.jpg

After the article above was published, Teri Jon reached out and asked if I would be interested in working with their company.  I literally jumped at the chance!

This brings me back to the dress I am featuring today.  My very own Teri Jon dress… needless to say… I am thrilled. I paired this dress with simple jewelry and silver pumps by Michael Kors.

IMG_5647 2.jpg
IMG_5678.jpg
IMG_5696.jpg

I chose this dress because of both the print but also the beautiful design.  It reminded me of dresses that my Mom and Grandma’s wore back in the 50’s .  Polka dots are timeless and ageless just like the Duke Mansion where these pictures were taken, in the Myers Park neighborhood of Charlotte.

IMG_5706.jpg

The Duke Mansion was built in 1915 has been home and host to leaders of the 20th century. Duke’s most lasting legacies, including Duke University, Duke Energy and the Duke Endowment, took shape at the home. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Mansion is operated as a nonprofit with all proceeds being used to preserve and protect this community treasure.

IMG_5770.jpg

As you can see this community treasure is a wonderful place to stay, celebrate, meet and relax.  If you are planning any of the above or looking for a very special venue in the Charlotte area, you have to include the Duke Mansion… where character and charm reside.

IMG_5613.jpg

Thank you to Teri Jon for sponsoring this post!  I am humbled to have featured the brand and this beautiful dress.  I may get a commission if you purchase through LIKEtoKNOW.it.  However, the links here take you straight to the Teri Jon website.

In closing, I want to thank you for stopping by the blog and I will leave you with a little reminder.  "Life is a Party" and it is what you make it.  Make it a great week, lovelies!!

"Of Course You May"

Beauty, Fashion, Lifestyle, Shoes, TravelJan Correll4 Comments

When becoming a grandmother almost 4 and 1/2 years ago, like most Grandma's, I was smitten with my first grandson.  He was born almost 3 months early and that made him even more precious.  At the time, I decided that as a Grandma, I wanted to be as special as my Grandma (Marnie) and my grandma (Nana) were. They were two very different women, one from a small town in Southern Illinois and the other an Italian immigrant from Chicago.  Although distinct women, their spirit and love for family and  their grandchildren was immense.   Marnie, was a spitfire, who kept reinventing herself (a yogi at 80) and Nana, a very successful business woman, providing global travel tours through her business.   Both taught me different things... that left life long impressions.  Nana; a great work ethic, and my love of cooking and travel and Marnie; to live life to the fullest and to make each little adventure count.

Even though my grands are all under the age of 5, I wanted to instill subtle lessons and reminders that may help them especially in times of self-doubt at any age.  "Of course you may." became my mantra to them whenever they ask me a question.  Unless of course, they wanted to do something dangerous.  "Of course you may," means that yes, they can have that chocolate chip cookie or yes, I will play pirates or dolls, but it also means that they can do anything!  And that is what I want them to remember.  They can change their mind, they have the right to make decisions (although there are consequences) and that they have the ability to be in control.   Much like my Grandma Marnie, I like to get down on the floor, do somersaults, make up stories, and play in the dirt but the love, affection and support she provided, was that I was special and I could do anything I wanted.

So friends we need to remember this phrase as well because we can do anything, or be anything we want at any age; start a blog, start a business, travel, change course, meet new people, try different things, continue to learn... "of course you may, my friend."

My Herb Garden

Home, Lifestyle, Fashion, Favorite ProductsJan CorrellComment

I don't want you to get the wrong picture in your head... about a large garden.  Let's reset the expectations... I should have titled this, my small herb garden.   Our home was built on less than 1/10th of an acre in a planned unit development.  And although we are on a very small lot, we love our home, neighborhood, and neighbors and make the most out of what we have.  Hence, this is my herb garden, which I plant every year.  Yes, it's in a pot!

I tried to warn you!  :)

I tried to warn you!  :)

I love this little garden as it has everything I need; mint, rosemary, and basil. Fresh basil is for my "sauce", salads, drinks and more.  I use rosemary at least once a week in different recipes and mint is a staple after I concocted my own special drink shared below:

 The Zesty Mint Cooler

3 lemon slices, 3 lime slices, and Mint leaves muddled

1 1/2 fluid ounces of your favorite vodka (I like Tito's)

Soda Water of your choice and extra lime or lemon juice as needed for a cocktail glass

2 drops of Stevia ( I like Trader Joes)

Shake and pour over ice!  You can adjust the tartness to your liking by adding more soda and lemon/lime juice. And if you are fresh out of limes and lemons, use pure lemon/lime juice with no sugar.

YUM!!

YUM!!

Before we downsized, we had a much larger garden with tomatoes, peppers and more but this little garden is perfect for us now.  I love to cultivate and grow something and it's so easy to have your herb "staples" outside your back door.  Do you grow herbs or vegetables?

Mr. Silver and I recently found this beautiful herb garden, outside an office building when we were taking pictures in downtown Charlotte.  Such a fun use of space in an unexpected place... and this herb garden blew mine away.  In the pics, I am wearing a simple white top from J. Crew Factory, frayed Joe Jeans, simple black slides by Marc Fisher and some Ray Ban Sunnies.  My scarf is from Anthropologie earlier this spring.  All the details are below and you can shop via LIKEtoKNOW.it.

Last week, Mr. Silver and I took a jaunt over to Charleston for the day while in Hilton Head for a stay-cation.  We love Charleston for all the fun shops, great eats, and the southern style charm.    The weather was gorgeous, not too hot and a beautiful breeze.

We spent the morning walking around and shopping, and ate lunch at a fun taco place, Mr. Silver knew I would enjoy; Taco Boy.  In the afternoon, we had drinks at the Pavilion Bar on the rooftop of the Market Pavilion Hotel which offered great views of the city and the harbor and visited the bar at 5Church; pics below.  5Church is worth a visit in itself, just to see a former church, renovated to a restaurant.  Definitely check out the art, the ceiling, and the drinks.  We finished the day at Husk, which is a must for a great dinner if you are planning a trip to Charleston.  Hint… book reservations way before your visit!!!

That day, I was wearing wide-leg floral pants from H&M (I call them culottes... remember them),  a silk sleeveless blouse, open toe booties and a rattan Boho circle bag.  It was the perfect “cool” outfit for the day.  Follow the link below for shopping details on IG and LIKEtoKNOW.it.

Super Women Wednesday: Connie Reed

Meet Connie!  A 59-year-old Military brat that has lived and experienced many places growing up. She believes that this life, while not always loved, helped to shape how she lives today. Family, church, and the ability to live an active lifestyle are very important to her, as well as giving back. Connie is fortunate that all 3 of her children and grandson live in Charlotte, close by.  Her faith keeps her grounded and an active lifestyle includes being a lifelong runner, including a couple of marathons, and her new functional fitness class, Cross Fit. Connie also loves gardening, quilting, reading, traveling, and her longtime involvement and work with Habitat for Humanity

Connie was a high school math teacher after college and then decided to work in the home full time.  As CEO of her home, (family of five) she helped run the family effectively, including all of the extra-curricular activities; church, sports, mission trips, etc. Her family has worked with Habitat for Humanity for approx. 20 years... starting with builds in Charlotte. This work also allowed her children the opportunity to see and experience giving back to others through Habitat.  They have all participated on builds out of the country;  including El Salvador, Ecuador, Africa, Costa Rica, the Philippines, and the Jimmy Carter build in Thailand. Connie and her husband currently do a weeklong build in El Salvador twice a year. She feels its very rewarding to meet the homeowners; whose lives you helped to change.

Current life and Chico’s: Connie started working as a part-time sales associate 9 years ago when her children left home. She likes fashion and loves helping women feel good about what they are wearing. Chico’s has done several charities over the past couple of years but Connie was thrilled to learn they were partnering with Habitat for Humanity - Women’s Build initiative, which is a build designed specifically for women. Houses built for women by women... but men can help, too. It is all about empowering women by helping them have a safe place to live. Chico’s FAS is trying to raise $ 650,000 for the Women’s Build initiative to work with 77 communities across the United States. Two communities will receive funding to build a house and the other 75 will receive $1000.00 grants towards their Women’s Build program. At the Charlotte South Park store, they are promoting the collaboration by making customers aware of the campaign. Connie took it a step further and made informational signs, brought in some Habitat shirts, tool belts, and hard hats for the mannequins, and educated her fellow associates on the importance of the effort to give fellow females a “hand up in life”.  Connie believes that we don’t have to move mountains to help others, but be consistent with what we can do or give, whether it’s time, money, or talents. It all adds up for the greater good of mankind.

I hope you enjoyed meeting Connie...  a Mom and Grandmother making a difference for others whether it be a family needing a home or a shopper looking for the latest styles.

Bravo, Connie!

As always, thank you for reading and stopping by the blog.  My goal is to share authentic ageless style and relevant information as we share this journey together!  I so appreciate you, my friends and readers!

A Two Week Ride on a Tilt-a-Whirl

My favorite ride at an amusement is still the mind-jangling unpredictability of a Tilt-A-Whirl.  As you might recall, it spins its passengers in one direction, then another, sometimes hesitating between forays and sometimes swinging abruptly from one motion to another. This is the perfect analogy of life with a 1, 1 1/2, 3, and 4 year old; three little boys and a baby girl.

Let me start by saying these are all wonderful children, (admittedly, these precious darlings are my grandchildren).  The oldest two are well mannered and polite and set a great example for their younger siblings.  However, the energy level and the lack of communication skills on top of young emotions can be a ride.

Our Son and DIL in North Carolina went out of the country for 7 days entrusting us with their children.  Two days later our Daughter and SIL in Texas did the same.  We had a blast!  However, I will say it is much different when you are not handing them back at the end of the day or after an overnight.  Just like many moons ago, these little's depended on us entirely; diapers, pull-ups, wipings, throw-ups, scraped knees, bruises, meals, baths, drop-offs, hugs, kisses, time-outs (only 2), and bed-time stories.  In between, there were many adventures; power wheels, park visits, horseback rides,  train rides, strawberry picking, ice cream, soccer, Batman, some TV, snow cones, hot wheels, baby dolls, and forts.  The most important thing is that we kept them uber busy and on their own schedules so that Mom nor Dad were missed.

Would we do it again? Absolutely, it was a fun ride.  We may just ask for a week in between... next time!

Before leaving Texas, we did take a couple of photos about town and in front of a new mural in New Braunfels.  And what a beautiful mural it is... (on the Comal Flower Shop wall) the El Legado De Nuestra Jornada –The Legacy of Our Journey. This public mural, commissioned by The Historic Outdoor Art Museum in New Braunfels, is a timeline of Hispanic heritage dating from the 1680’s to 1845. Designed by MOSAIC Artist-in-Residence Alex Rubio, the 12 ft. by 60 ft. mural was completed by lead  MOSAIC Student Artists Laura Gonzalez, Rachel Kamata, Zöe Reyes, and Elizabeth Samuel.  In fact, we met one of the artists the day we were there.

Standing in front of the beautiful wall, I am wearing a white and gold Lilly Pulitzer silk shirt (from the clost, white frayed jeans, gold Kate Spade sandals, gold leaf earrings and borrowed bracelets from my daughter to match.  In fact, I loved the bracelets so much, I hinted that they would make a nice Mother's day gift for this Nannie (Grandma).  You can message Laureen @ McCotti designs here for details.   All other details or similar items are in the gallery below!

Pop (Mr. Silver) and I are still not completely rested but are getting there.  We loved our experience with our sweet grands and can't wait to see what is around the next spin and the adventure it brings.

Have a great rest of the week and as always, thank you for reading the blog.  My goal is to share chic, authentic and ageless style; covering fashion, beauty, and relevant lifestyle information as we share this journey together!  I really appreciate you!

Special Feature: Sharing A Journey

Have you ever met someone and wished you gotten to know her sooner?  I feel this way about Nina of Sharing a Journey an ageless Fashion and Lifestyle blog.   I am thrilled and happy to share and promote her to you, my readers as part of a special feature!

Getting to know her...  first, over a year ago we both participated in a blogging event called The Fierce Fifty.  We were two of 50 female bloggers who partnered to share each other's stories.  Several of us in the group became friends and since then Nina started an informal group so that we could stay connected and help each other.  When she suggested a similar collaboration amongst our small group I was excited to be paired with Nina as I had admired her from afar.  From our very first phone call, I could tell that she is not only a beautiful woman but also, has a beautiful spirit; with a passion for sincere kindness and a love for others.

Nina’s story is one you may have heard and that I too have experienced a part of.  The love of a raising independent children and having a great career but also that search of, what’s next in this journey of life.  Nina has a beautiful college-age daughter and is soon to be a permanent empty nester!  What’s interesting about Nina’s story is that although very accomplished in a variety of ways she realized areas of her life that she wanted to change and improve and as she made these changes her story led her to a mid-life renaissance and her blog.

Nina is fashionably chic, classic and elegant with a  twist.  I feel that our styles are somewhat similar and maybe that is one of the ways in which I feel a kinship.  She looks great in anything and does not tell her readers how to dress but guides them by trying new things to keep her look interesting and fun. Nina also stays very active and practices daily meditation and reflection, you can read some her "Morning Musings" here.

I hope you will pop over to Nina’s blog, Sharing a Journey and check it out!  She’s a great writer offering wonderful perspective.

Below are some questions I posed to Nina in the hopes that you may get to know her better, too!

What has been the biggest benefit as a result of your blog? The biggest benefit I’ve experienced from my blog is the relationships I’ve developed with other bloggers, and Sharing A Journey Readers.  We’ve been doing bi-weekly Facebook Lives, which has been really fun because of the interaction in the community.

What or who inspires you?  I am most inspired by the women I’ve met over the past year or so who are rocking midlife like nobody’s business.  Two of my friends have started businesses and are crushing it, my daughter who is just starting out is amazing and going strong.  I think it’s all the positive creative energy.  It’s amazing and so powerful.

What’s the most exciting/adventuresome thing you have ever done? I am not an adventurous person.  My father loved to travel and was always introducing me to new experiences.  I still smile remembering how many times he had me doing all sorts of silly things (and snapping photos of me—he was a photographer in his later years) and the many trips we took together.  Now that he’s gone my biggest adventures have been starting over after being divorced, beginning a new chapter with an almost empty nest and starting Sharing A Journey.  I’d love to travel again and am hoping to go back to Europe next year.

Do you have a mantra/motto you live by?  One thing that started happening last year was that I started receiving “guide words”.  I would work with one like “say yes” and when that would sort of peter out, another word would come.  The words helped me navigate all the new territory I was experiencing with the blog and my life.

Do you have any regrets?  I regret listening to negative Nellie’s who discouraged others and me. You know the kind of people who don’t want anyone to be their best.  I only surround myself with people who want the best for themselves and others.  I am blessed to be in a small working group of women who really enjoy seeing each other succeed and help each other.  We cheer each other on—one of my friends is launching a book next week—she started it 7 months ago and now it’s being printed!  I can’t wait!

What would you like to tell your younger self?  Not to listen, spend time or give any energy to people who don’t bring out the best in one another.

What are your thoughts on aging?  I don’t think much about “aging”- I am all about living my best life and encouraging others to do the same.

What is one thing that you look forward to every day? Just experiencing life, whatever comes that day, it’s mostly good, and I am grateful. (Though I did have a blood test today and my arm still hurts...)

I hope you enjoyed meeting Nina!  If you are in mid-life you already know about this voyage toward the next phase of our lives and the challenges it brings.   I hope you find it inspiring and insightful to read about other women and their journeys so that we know we are never alone.

Have a great rest of the week and as always, thank you for stopping by the blog.  My goal is to share authentic ageless style; fashion, beauty and relevant lifestyle information! I appreciate you!

A Sympli Beautiful Black Dress

Fashion, Dresses, Lifestyle, Purses/Handbags, ShoesJan Correll4 Comments

As a result of a recent post I did for Scoop Charlotte, I was provided the opportunity to work with Paul Simon Women, a boutique in Charlotte.   I'm sorry to say that I had not been to this boutique before... but will not be a stranger again!  What led me to this work with Paul Simon in the first place was a blogger friend that had asked for some formal dress advice on a very special occasion for her as MOB/Mother of the Bride.  Scoop Charlotte paired me up with PSW to help with my endeavor and help they did and more!!  You can read my post on Scoop Charlotte here.

The more is the fact that I fell in love with the store and their classic, chic lines but also their wonderful staff.  The day I was there, the manager, Johann, had on this beautiful black knit dress which I commented on.  Although I was shopping for MOB/MOG, I knew that it likely would not fit into my post, featuring 5 different special occasion/evening wear outfits.  However she insisted, I try it on.  Needless to say I did, and fell in LOVE with this dress by Sympli.  I had heard of the brand in the past from a couple of female executive colleagues, who traveled as much as I did.   They loved the brand and the wearability for travel and versatility. (Hopefully, a collaboration is in the works for the near future.)  My friends had told me about the brands strong following and the staff at PSW  reiterated that point.  PSW is one of a few "select" boutiques in the SouthEast offering the Sympli line, which is based out of B. C. Canada.

I hope you enjoy these pics of this beautiful black dress and how I styled it.

Why do I love this dress so much?  First and foremost, I love the fit! Secondly, it can be dressed up or down with the right accessories.  And  next, it can be worn as a v-neck or round neck by "simply" putting it on in reverse!  If you are traveling, I would wear this with Chuck Taylor low-top converse or flat, fun sandals during the the day and with stilettos or strappy sandals into the evening.  In fact, Johann said someone had recently purchased it for a black tie event.  I could definitely see that.

You will see this dress in a future post and I will definitely be dressing it down!

To purchase this dress, clutch and earrings,  contact Paul Simon Women here: this Sympli dress is $230,  the bag is Lilla P, $128, and the earrings are Samantha McCroll $85.

If you have a chance to stop by Paul Simon Women, please do and tell them that Jan from Silver sent you!!  I should also mention Paul Simon offers men's clothes, too!  I need to take Mr. Silver by soon.

Have a great rest of the week and as always, thank you for reading the blog.  My goal is to share chic, authentic and ageless style; covering fashion, beauty, and relevant lifestyle information as we share this journey together!  I really appreciate you!

Female Hand-Crafted Jewelry

I am a fan of jewelry and I know many of you are too!  I recently found a company, actually, they found me and I fell in love with their story.  Each piece of jewelry is designed and hand-crafted by women, and it can vary slightly due to the fact it is made in limited quantities.  Each collection is designed to enhance a woman's individual beauty.  The company is Sabika; a company by women and for women.  You can learn more about them here

IMG_0262.jpg

The story starts with the founder, Karin Mayr, (at the age 50) when she found her family in financial need.  She had been a successful businesswoman as a trend forecaster working for others, for years. Her mission has stayed true to women empowerment through her commitment to helping women along their paths to growth.

I should not have been surprised when their head designer picked out the pieces specifically for me, but I was!  I have linked the beautiful jewelry in the gallery below.  Lucky, for me she chose some pieces done in collaboration with Swarovski, called the Sabika Cut®, that holds 30 geometric facets. Most of the pieces also have a signature pink heart  inscribed on them as an indicator of authenticity. You can purchase Sabika jewelry on line here or you can find a local consultant here.  You won't be disappointed with the collections and high quality... and remember that each time you purchase Sabika you are empowering women.  A great Mother's Day gift idea!!

Thank you to Sabika for sponsoring this post and the beautiful jewelry.  All opinions are my own.

Have a great rest of the week and as always, thank you for stopping by the blog.  My goal is to share authentic ageless style; fashion, beauty and relevant lifestyle information as we share this fun journey together!  I  appreciate you!

A Fan... Yes!

If you're like me and have suffered through hot flashes or night sweats, you want a solution!  Yes, a fan works wonders but typically only cools your face, or can sometimes cool you down, too much!  Cold tile floors work wonders, too!  However, they are not always convenient.

IMG_0808.jpg

Nights have been the worst for me!  Hot/cold, cold/hot!  Covers off, covers on!  To say I drive Mr. Silver batty at times is an understatement and no...he does not get to weigh in!  Tee hee!  However, I found a sleep solution a few years back that truly helps and I don't wear any other pajamas to bed.  The brand is Soma, trusted by many including me, (love the Vanishing Back!)  But back to PJs, the line is called, Cool Nights and is a Soma Solution, which features their signature fabric that feels cool against your skin.  They are very soft and so comfortable.  I highly recommend them to you.   In fact, I recently had to "retire" a few pairs, so when SOMA approached me to collaborate, I jumped at the chance!!  Ladies, if you or your daughters, mothers or any female friend is having "hot flushes" or night sweats... order them a pair!  And with Mother's Day on the way... they make great gifts.

IMG_0810.jpg
IMG_0840.jpg

Cool Night PJs have a special tag to indicate they are in fact Cool Nights, as Soma sells other pajama's that do not have this special fabric!  I have linked my PJ's below in the gallery.  However, be sure to look at the full selection, there are many beautiful prints and options to choose from.

IMG_0823.jpg

Have you tried Cool Nights?  And if you have, do you love them as much as I do?   Please comment and let me know!!  As you can tell, I am a "fan" of Cool Nights.   They have helped improve my sleep, (lord knows... I need my beauty sleep,) And I was already planning this post long before they reached out! Seriously, girlfriends!  TREAT yourself to some Cool Nights.

Thank you to Soma for sponsoring this post!  All opinions are my own.  I only feature and promote, what I find valuable to pass along to my readers.

Have a great rest of the week and as always, thanks for stopping by.  My goal is to share authentic ageless style; fashion, beauty and relevant lifestyle information as we share this fun, ageless journey together!  I appreciate you!

My Wardrobe Criteria List

Fashion, Jewelry, Lifestyle, Purses/HandbagsJan Correll4 Comments
IMG_0277.jpg

Happy Monday/Tuesday!  This post was supposed to go out yesterday but due to unforeseen circumstances... it did not.  I am a planner and some days just don't go as planned, as hard as I try.  In fact, I missed my book club last night due to a photo shoot running later than I thought... but had so much fun!  More on that in an upcoming post!

I thought I would share how I decide if an item makes it into my wardrobe.  As a planner, I have a list of everything I have to do daily and love to check it off.  As a list maker, I keep a list of grocery items, Target items, and Costco items on my phone.  I share the list with Mr. Silver on our iCal so that if he makes a run before I do, he knows what we need.  However, I do not share my wardrobe list, nor my home update list. :)

My closet is an average size, not over-sized, so I switch my summer and winter clothes 2x a year and keep a running tally (list) of what I have and what I need and what I would like to add including shoes, bags, and accessories.  That means that twice a year, I go through and donate items I no longer wear for the upcoming season to Dress for Success or another charity.  This keeps my wardrobe fresh and updated.

I have some guidelines that I use when shopping that you may find valuable, too.  These apply to most everything with the exception of special occasions.

1.  Will I wear an item multiple seasons?  In the south, we can wear things longer since our seasons tend to drag into each other.

2.  Is the cut flattering for my figure and will it be in style for at least a couple of years?

3.  Is the color flattering on me?  Does it accentuate my skin and hair color? And will the color take me through a couple of seasons?

4.  Do I see myself wearing this item more than 4 times?  If yes, that means, I will wear it a lot more but if not... it's a waste of money as I try not invest in items that just hang in my closet.

5.  If I don't buy it will I be sorry?  This is a big one.  Typically, if you like something a lot...buy it then because if you go back... I guarantee it will be gone.

6.  Is it on my list or a variation of what I need to compliment my current wardrobe or for an upcoming event?

7.  Is it good quality?  Your wardrobe is an investment...invest in good quality.  It will show, your feet won't hurt and you will always be happy with your purchases.

8.  Is it a closet staple that you can wear numerous ways?  My Eileen Fisher Moto Jacket, my favorite Jean Jacket, my favorite black pumps, tailored slacks, etc. are all worn time and time again and dressed up or down.

9.  Will I wear it with confidence?  If I doubt that I will, it's not a good purchase.

10. I am buying it just because it's on sale and a good deal?  I'm guilty of this too!  I always feel like it easier to justify a purchase but if it does not fit my guidelines above, I don't buy it!

I bought this simple J. Jill blue knit dress and have worn it as shown, with tights and flats, with boots and numerous ways already.  Same with the shoes, purse, and necklace.  In fact, I have built a couple of outfits around the necklace because I like it so much and knew it would fit my "wardrobe list!"

Do you have shopping guidelines you "try" to live by?  If so, I would love to hear them.  What's on your fashion shopping list?   Please share in the comments below!

Are you a Perennial?

Fashion, LifestyleJan Correll2 Comments
The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul.
— Alfred Austin
IMG_9873.jpg

I thought this was an interesting quote, based on a conversation I had yesterday when meeting a new friend.  She asked me how I stay relevant and current, not only with fashion and style but for the mind and the soul.  Over the course of the conversation, I found that she already invests in herself, by exercising regularly and eating healthy, she experiences new things by traveling and volunteering and has an active, faith-based lifestyle.  I also asked about reading and learning.  She shared that she is an avid reader and loves a good novel.  I shared one way that I continue to grow and learn is a simple app on my phone, Blinkist.  While walking or working out, I listen to a short "blink" (15 minutes or less) of a nonfiction book on a variety of topics (19 different categories) that interest me.  These blinks provide key highlights to over 2000 bestselling nonfiction books.  This habit allows me to stay current and fresh on a variety of topics and also provides a great start or an end of the day.  I can boost my knowledge, skills and widen my world in a short time frame.  The best part is that I can download these to my kindle for reference and that you can read them or listen in.

The definition of a perennial is: lasting or existing for a long or apparently infinite time; enduring or continually recurring.  This is my goal, to stay current, be relevant and to feed my mind and soul every day.  I feel it's more important than ever as a woman to show our kids, husbands, partners, grandkids, and families that we will continue to be a strong, lasting flower (presence) in this world.

Do you consider yourself a  perennial?  Would love to hear your thoughts on how you continue to grow and learn.

In this pic, I am wearing my favorite style purchase within the last year.  My Eileen Fisher moto jacket! (There are still some sizes left, details in the gallery below.) It is light enough to wear a sweater or tee underneath, and is perfect for any weather condition, it is machine washable and I can dress it up or down depending on my outfit. What is your favorite clothing purchase that you wear again and again... or should we say perennial piece?  :)

If you decide to purchase Blinkist, I may be compensated if you use the link I provided.  Purchase this app any way you can.  I highly endorse it.

Have a great rest of the week and as always, thank you for stopping by the blog.  My goal is to share authentic ageless style; fashion, beauty and relevant lifestyle information as we share this fun journey together!  I  appreciate you!
