Supporting Silvers Feature: Maudie Torrance

My story of self-love and acceptance started with the loss of my dad in July 2018. Life after this loss made me re-think many areas of my life, especially how I looked at aging. The need to focus on becoming healthier was immediate; I joined a gym and managed to change my menopausal look with regular exercise, which included 8-week challenges and a healthy diet. I initially found the gym a scary place, but things changed and I am now a gym junkie and fitter than in my 30's.

Grief made me ready for a midlife reboot and to stop hiding my grey hair and embracing my silver look was next. I colored my hair every 4-6 weeks. I have always admired women with grey hair and how confident they looked. I was intrigued as to what I would look like if I too ditched the dye. My visits to the hair salon became less frequent and purple shampoo became my new best friend. My hair was quite short when I started my silver journey, it is now almost 2 years later, much longer and I am embracing my natural waves for the first time in my entire life too. I am also enjoying the longer length to create different looks. It is a natural, low maintenance look and I am investing the time and money of compulsory salon visits on more rewarding things in life.

Through grief I have learned to befriend aging, whether or not I now look older with my silver threads, I realized that I cared less. I’m enjoying this phase, my age is 54. I don't want to be young again, I have been there and enjoyed it and I don't want to stay young at any cost. Breaking away from society’s expectations was curiously liberating.

There isn't one week that someone doesn't say, 'I love your hair!' or 'Your hair is so beautiful!'"

With grief, I have scrutinized my lifestyle and made changes in my early 50's and I know that my Dad is lovingly smiling while looking down at me.

Maudie is my friend from the Sunshine Coast of Australia. You can follow her on Instagram @my_silver_years. See for yourself; her fun and stylish feed and I have to mention her beautifully, natural silver hair.
